US President Barack Obama announced that he has nominated General Joseph Dunford to be the new chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Gen. Paul Selva as Vice-Chairman, at the White House Rose Garden in Washington, Tuesday. Obama praised Dunford, who has led a coalition attack in Afghanistan, calling the marine one of the "most admired officers". It is expected that the Senate will confirm Dunford's nomination, making him the president's chief military adviser. Addressing Selva, Obama listed the "challenges" he expects the armed forces to meet, which include establishing a "modern opposition in Syria", and fighting Al-Qaeda as well as the Islamic State. If confirmed by the Senate, General Dunford and General Selva will replace General Martin 'Marty' Dempsey and Admiral James 'Sandy' Winnefeld, who will complete their terms later in the year.
