Three trains carrying hundreds of refugees arrived in Munich after travelling from Vienna on Monday evening. The refugees were given a warm welcome with many of the city's residents greeting the refugees with banners, hugs and food. Police heavily guarded the station as people were given water and medical attention on arrival. Families were picked out of the crowds first to be transferred to the initial refugee centres. Footage shows people waiting for the buses which will bring them to the refugee centres. Several anti-refugee protesters were spotted outside of the train station however police kept the situation remained under control. Austrian authorities initially halted the trains near the Austrian-Hungarian border claiming they were overcrowded. Before sending the trains back on the road, the authorities checked whether the refugees aboard the train have applied for asylum in Hungary in which case they were not allowed to carry on with their journey. Austrian officials said that the rest of the refugees and migrants aboard the train will be allowed to stay in Austria for two weeks to decide if they wish to claim asylum there, with the rest being returned to their last country of transit, Hungary. On August 21 Germany declared its suspension of the Dublin Regulation for Syrian refugees, requiring that migrants claim asylum only in the first country the enter within the EU. However Germany is now permitting officers to process applications of Syrian asylum seekers even if they travelled through other EU countries first.
