06.05.2015
"Being shocked is a part of democratic debate. Being shot is not."
So said Gérard Biard, Editor-in-Chief of Charlie Hebdo at Monday night's PEN Literary Gala in New York City. Hosted by the PEN American Center at the Museum of Natural History, the PEN Literary Gala is an annual celebration of free speech. The night was not without its share of controversy. Charlie Hebdo's illustrations of the Prophet Muhammad have been particularly polarizing. For many Muslims, any depiction of Muhammad is considered sacrilegious. The magazine's illustrations raised complex questions about freedom of speech, religious intolerance and satire.
A dozen people, including 10 journalists, were killed in an attack on the magazine's office in Paris on January 7.
