Firefighters and ambulances rushed to the site of a reported ammonia leak at a slaughterhouse in Gropelingen, near Bremen, Friday. The incident reportedly resulted in the hospitalisation of 14 people.
A large-scale operation dispatched 20 emergency vehicles and 52 personnel, some clad in hazmat suits, to the slaughterhouse in order to stop the leak and prevent further escalation.
The spokesperson for Bremen Fire Department Michel Richerts stressed the hazardous nature of this chemical, saying, "It makes its way into the respiratory tracts and, for this reason, it's very complicated to deal with."
The fire department ventilated the affected area and was eventually able to give the slaughterhouse the all-clear.
