Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitri Peskov expressed hope for a normalisation of relations between Moscow and Washington while discussing the summit between Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin during an interview with RT in Moscow, Friday.
According to Peskov, Putin "cares about the national interests of Russia, above everything else", so he also accepts Trump placing US national interests on the highest position.
"This approach has to be based on commitment to develop mutually beneficial co-operation which takes into account the interests of other countries as well. All these factors added together can create a proper environment for developing co-operation," the spokesperson added.
Putin and Trump are to meet for historic summit in Helsinki on Monday, where they are set to approach topics such as the alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 US elections, Syria, Ukraine, NATO and US economic sanctions.
Also on the agenda is also the possible extension and expansion of an Obama-era arms control treaty known as New START, which aims to reduce the nuclear weapon stash of both countries and is set to expire in 2021. The two presidents will meet alone, as per a request from the White House.
