Heavy clashes erupted between police and female activists protesting for better social and economic conditions, in Istanbul's Kadikoy district, Sunday. At least two women were arrested and several were injured.
Police officers used rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the crowd which gathered despite the ban on the march by Istanbul district council. The activists hoped to draw attention to issues such as gender equality, domestic violence as well as the low rate of female participation in the workforce.
The protest took place ahead of the International Women's Day on Tuesday.
Turkey ranks 77th out of 138 countries on a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) index of gender equality. According to Turkish Ministry of Family and Social Policy, at least 40 percent of women in Turkey suffer from violent abuse from a spouse or family member and only 28 percent of women participate in the workforce, compared with the average of 63 percent in the European Union.
