Supporters of Dilma Rousseff gathered outside the offices of the president of Brazil, Thursday, after the Brazilian Senate announced their decision to suspend Rousseff and continue with impeachment proceedings.
Rousseff's supporters were filmed crying while others chanted slogans decrying Vice President Michel Temer who will now take over from the suspended president. Many of Brazil’s poorest communities came out to show support for the ousted president, including several indigenous Brazilian groups.
The Senate voted 55 to 22 in favour of impeaching Brazil's first female president, who will now be suspended for up to six months while a committee investigates whether she broke the country's budget laws ahead of her re-election in 2014.
Brazil's Vice President Michel Temer will serve as acting president throughout the trial, ending 13 years of rule by the Workers' Party. If Rousseff is convicted, Temer will serve as president until the end of 2018.
