Hundreds of protesters railed against the far-right populist political party Alternative for Germany (AFD) in Berlin on Friday as Berliners head to the ballots for the capital’s state elections on Sunday.
Protesters marched with huge anti-AfD banners and antifa flags, starting from Berlin’s northern Schoenhauser Allee and ending on Zionskirchstrasse, where the office of AfD Member of Parliament Beatrix Von Starch is located.
Despite Berlin being expected to re-elect the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD), the AfD is reportedly polling at 14 percent in the capital, after the anti-Muslim, anti-refugee party made large gains in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s state elections.
