There was a huge security presence at the Bacha Khan University in Charsadda District as the Pakistani Army took control of the scene and as victims of the deadly attack were transported to hospital, Wednesday. Army officials arrived with weapons such as rocket launchers as well as dogs trained to sniff out explosives.
Earlier, Chief of Staff of the Pakistan Army Raheel Sharif was transported to the university in via helicopter, to inspect the scene where a group of militants stormed the buildings killing at least 21 people and injuring dozens more.
He was greeted by Pakistani security forces that arrived at the site earlier, engaging in a gunfight with the attackers. Four of the gunmen were reportedly killed by Pakistani troops. The operation has ended and security forces have secured the campus.
The attack took place around 09.30 local time (04.30 GMT) after heavily armed gunmen opened fire on students and teachers on the campus. Two large explosions were also heard during the assault.
A high-ranking Pakistani Taliban commander claimed responsibility for the attack but an official spokesperson for the group later denied the claim, branding the attack "un-Islamic."
Local authorities have warned that the death toll may rise as the situation continues.
