Spain: Taxis block major Barcelona street over proposed ride share rules
2
18.01.2019
Taxi drivers in Barcelona started an 'immediate and indefinite' strike on Friday after new regulations proposed by the Catalan government failed to satisfy them and their ride sharing counterparts.
Footage shows countless taxis blocking Gran Via, one of Barcelona's busiest streets, causing 5km-long (3mi) traffic jams. Taxi unions consider ride sharing to be unfair competition.
The proposed regulations would force users of Uber and Cabify, among other apps, to book their ride at least 15 minutes in advance - taxi unions demanded a 12-hour minimum delay - and would force ride share drivers to return to their base after each ride instead of roaming the city.
Both sides - taxi drivers and ride sharing apps - rejected the proposal.
