Netherlands: 'Racist' Black Pete and Sinta Klass parade divides Meppel

A Sinta Klass parade held in the city of Meppel, Saturday, attracted a collective of skinheads and anti-racist protesters who argued against one another. A organisation known as "Kick Out Black Piet" opposed what they believe is a racist custom of black-facing. However, the rally was met with local groups of right-wingers and young fanatic supporters of Sinta klass, dividing the parade. Anti-racist banners were displayed alongside locals dressed up in the Zwarte Piet attire. Security forces were present to prevent an escalation of tensions into violence. The Black Pete character is causing mounting controversy in the Netherlands over racial stereotyping. The celebration is increasingly seen as racist in a country that has become more diverse and multi-ethnic since World War Two. Supporters of Black Pete say, however, the character is an integral part of Dutch culture and claim the tradition is underfire by outsiders.
