Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa will auction off gifts presented to him and other members of the Ecuadorian government to help fund social programmes for the needy and assist those affected by the April 16 earthquake in Ecuador. Footage from the Presidential Palace in Quito, Wednesday, shows some of the jewelry on auction.
Among the gifts to be auctioned is a jewelry set worth around $276,000 (€250,000) gifted by King Salman Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia as well as gold and diamond jewelry set gifted to Correa's wife.
The total value of the gifts, presented by countries such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Switzerland, are estimated at around $1.7 million (over €1.5 million), but it is hoped that the charitable nature of the auction will result in a far higher price than the estimate.
A total of 223 people were killed and 1,500 injured during April's earthquake and several powerful aftershocks. Thousands of homes were left without power as a result.
