Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff said “my government will have better conditions to put Brazil back on track with Lula by my side" during a televised speech in Brasilia on Thursday.
Ahead of the speech, Rousseff appointed her predecessor Luiz Inacio ‘Lula’ da Silva as her Chief of Staff, despite him being under investigation for charges of corruption and money laundering. The pair received a standing ovation following Lula’s swearing in.
After the ceremony, the federal judge in Brasilia delivered an injunction to suspend Lula’s appointment on the basis that it prohibited “the free exercise of justice.” The government is expected to appeal the injunction in a higher court.
