Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Finnish President Sauli Niinisto in Naantali, Finland, on Friday.
The talks were thought to have focused on bilateral relations between the two countries, including trade, economic and humanitarian ties. The two men also discussed current interregional relations, cooperation between border regions and key international issues.
The Russian leader voiced both gratitude for the chance to meet with Niinisto, and optimism for their future relationship. "We have several things to talk about, such as our bilateral relations, taking into account the events that have taken place in Europe and around the world. I am very excited about this opportunity [to meet with you] that you have provided. Thank you!," Putin said.
Niinisto also expressed positivity about relations between Russia and Finland despite a host of problems in the international arena. “Nothing has changed here, but unfortunately the world has changed, and not for the best. And that is why it is very important that we could move forward with regards the good issues in the world, and you have a major role to play in this," Niinisto said.
