07.07.2016
The two police officers who shot and killed Alton Sterling were named by Baton Rouge Police Chief in Louisiana on Wednesday.
In a statement during a press conference in Baton Rouge, Dabadie said:
“The officers involved in yesterday’s events were Blane Salamano, four-year veteran of the Baton Rouge police department, and Howie Lake, a three-year veteran of the Baton Rouge police department. Both officers have been placed on administrative leave, pending the investigation. The investigation is now ongoing. With that being said, and echoing what Pastor Robinson said, it is our goal and our mission to make sure that a full, just, transparent and independent investigation be conducted into this incident.”
Sterling, 37, was shot when the two police officers went to investigate a claim that he had a gun while selling CDs in the parking lot of the Baton Rouge Store. According to the store owner, the situation spiraled rapidly out of control and the police officers fired five to seven shots at Sterling, whose autopsy shows he died from multiple gunshot wounds to his chest and back.
Police are analysing dash cam video evidence, as both officers body cameras reportedly fell off during the incident. His death is the latest incident in a long line of police shootings, and has been met with outrage by Black Lives Matter and other racial justice groups.
