The Strasbourg-bound Kurdish 'Long March' march took off from Mannheim to mark the 20th anniversary of the arrest of Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Ocalan on Sunday.
Footage shows the participants holding up flags, pictures and signs with names of people holding a hunger strike for the political prisoners. Reportedly, over 120 people gathered in the city centre.
According to a Kurdish activist Raman Bilal: "We want to take the political stage with this march and show our resistance. We are marching for the freedom of Abdullah Ocalan, for a breakthrough in the isolation of Abdullah Ocalan."
The police presence was reportedly high - around 100 police officers accompanied the demo due to the arrest of a Kurdish marcher in Cologne.
Press Speaker for Police Operational Headquarters in Baden-Wuttemberg Roland Fleischer said: "We hope that it [the march] remains peaceful and that there won't be any rioting, that all the participants and onlookers act prudently and that no one comes to harm."
Abdullah Ocalan was arrested by the Turkish secret service in Nairobi, Kenya on February 15th, 1999. He is currently serving an aggravated life imprisonment sentence in Turkey.
The march will reportedly last for over seven days with seven stages, from Mannheim to the end point, which is the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
