Colonel General Igor Korobov, who led the Russian Military Intelligence Directorate (GRU), died at the age of 62 on Thursday, according to the Ministry of Defence.
Archive footage published by the Ministry of Defence shows Korobov holding a meeting on Syria, on August 25th, 2017.
Korobov died “after a long and serious illness,” the Defence Ministry said in a statement.
He joined the army in the late 1970s and served in the air force before moving to military intelligence.
Last year, he was awarded the title Hero of Russia, the nation’s highest honour.
Under Korobov’s leadership, the agency became known in the West for Moscow’s attempts to influence the world.
The GRU agency has been accused by the West of meddling in various elections, carrying out cyberattacks, as well as poisoning former double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in Salisbury.
