UK: Scottish Parliament backs Sturgeon to hold direct EU talks

Scotland's First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, has received the backing of the Scottish Parliament to hold direct talks with the European Union, following an emergency debate held in Edinburgh on Tuesday.
Motion 601, which mandates Sturgeon to hold direct talks with European institutions and member states to keep Scotland in the EU, was backed by 92 MPs, with 0 voting against, and 32 abstentions.
The UK as a whole voted by 51.9% to 48.1% to leave the EU in a referendum last week, but Scotland elected by 62% to 38% to remain in the EU.
