White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest held his weekly press briefing in Washington DC, Monday, where he commented on the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director James Comey's letter to Congress, informing them of FBI's new probe into the latest leaked e-mails from Democratic Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s private e-mail server
Earnest said of Comey he was a man of integrity, of principle, and in a tough spot. "He’s in a tough spot, and he’s the one who will be in a position to defend his actions in the face of significant criticism from a variety of legal experts, including individuals who served in senior Department of Justice positions in administrations that were led by presidents in both parties," said Earnest. The White House spokesperson also suggested that US President Barack Obama doesn't believe Comey was intentionally trying to influence the outcome of the election.
Earnest stated that Clinton's harshest critics had capitalised on the letter, distorting its contents to provoke controversy. "I made a reference earlier to the Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee who committed the classic Washington gaffe of saying something in public that everyone secretly knows is true, which is that House Republicans are already plotting the impeachment of Hillary Clinton, even though she hasn't even been elected President yet," said Earnest.
Eleven days before the US 2016 General Election FBI director James Comey wrote a letter stating that newly discovered emails from Clinton's server were under review.
