Over 250 Orthodox Christians braved the freezing waters of the river Danube in Belgrade on Saturday, for a traditional race for the Holy Cross in celebration of Epiphany. The winner of this year's race was 18-year old cancer survivor Jovana Leposavic from the Serbian capital.
Prior to the race, Serbian Patriarch Irinej led a liturgy in the Temple of the Holy Father Nikolai, and consecrated the waters of the Danube and the swimmers.
Addressing the spectators after the race, Leposavic dedicated the cross to cancer survivors and victims.
"This means a lot to me because it is dedicated to my friends who are being treated for the cancer and those who, unfortunately, have left us in the past two or three years," she said.
