A neuropsychologist who ran tests on James Holmes over three days told jurors at his murder trial on Thursday there were no signs the shooter was faking mental illness.
His court-appointed lawyers say the former neuroscience graduate student, who had never been in trouble before, suffers from schizophrenia.
They added, voices in his head commanded him to kill over which he had no control.
Robert Hanlon, a Chicago-based clinical neuropsychologist, described for the court the tests he performed on Holmes over more than 13 hours of jail house sessions in April 2013.
Hanlon had only been asked to assess the cognitive function of Holmes, he did not gauge his state of mind.
Hanlon noted Holmes IQ declined from 123 to 116 over the course of their sessions strongly suggesting a pathological process at work.
