Popular Front for Change and Liberation President Qadri Jamil announced the presentation of a new document outlining the framework for the “future state structure of Syria” to UN Special Envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura, in Geneva on Wednesday.
“The Moscow and Astana groups [of the opposition] have handed in a document with the main principles and ideas for the Intra-Syrian talks,” stated Jamil, adding “It has seven points, which we will deliver to the mass media soon.”
“These points are related to international resolutions on an agreement on limits for the transitional government and an agreement on the general framework of the constitution, also related to presidential and parliamentary elections,” said Jamil.
The Popular Front for Change and Liberation leader’s sentiment was echoed by former Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Jihad Makdissi, who said “we came to find a political solution, not to be just advisors, to bring ideas, be present and help de Mistura's mission to succeed.”
A new round of intra-Syria talks began in Geneva on Monday, March 14. Negotiations between the Syrian government and opposition forces were suspended on February 3 and resumed after a cessation of hostilities came into effect on February 27. Despite occasional reports of violations, the truce is said to be generally holding. The main goal of the intra-Syria negotiations, which are due to continue through to March 24, is to ultimately end the five-year conflict in Syria.
