USA: Thousands of Latinos hit Wisconsin Capitol in protest against immigration bills

19.02.2016
Tens of thousands of Latin-Americans and civil rights supporters rallied outside the Wisconsin State Capitol in Madison, Thursday, later storming the building in protest against what they consider discriminatory immigration bills.
Over 15,000 protesters, rallying under the banner of 'Day Without Latinos and Immigrants', amassed at the Capitol building in protest against the SB533 and AB450 bill recently passed by state authorities. Organized by the Wisconsin Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, We Are All Milwaukee Coalition, and Voces de la Frontera, the demo kicked off with thousands of members of the Latino community leaving work for the day in an attempt to convey the effect of their absence.
The SB533 bill proposes restrictions on local authorities' issuing ID's to so-called illegal immigrants. The document is currently awaiting Governor Scott Walker's go-ahead after it passed in Assembly and Senate votes.
The AB450 law would bar any Wisconsin city from restricting its police force from questioning detained people about their immigration status. According to the protesters, the bill would increase racial profiling, while turning local police forces into immigration services.
