At least 12 people were killed and more than 60 injured following an explosion at a massage parlour in the area of the Roxas Night Market in Davao, Friday.
Emergency service crews were rushed to the site of the blast, which is considered one of the major people-hotspots in the city. During the aftermath, crowds were seen running away from the site, after reports of a second explosion.
Local news outlets informed that prior to the attack, the Philippine National Police have thwarted an assassination plot against Filipino President Rodrigo Duterte, who was expected to arrive in town on Friday. The reason behind the blast are yet unclear, with speculations running high of a bomb attack. No groups have claimed responsibility at the time of writing.
Shortly after assuming power, Duterte launched a full-scale war on drugs in the Philippines. As of August 2016, the war on drugs has seen around 2,000 alleged drug dealers killed, thousands arrested and more than 500,000 alleged dealers and drug users surrendered to the police forces. Duterte also came under harsh criticism by the international community for his alleged association with reported vigilante groups involved in the war on drugs.
