Several thousand people gathered at Istanbul's Taksim Square, Saturday, to celebrate the end of the military coup that shocked the country on Friday evening.
Troops from a breakaway faction of the army attempted to take over major communication, transport, and administrative in major cities including Istanbul and Ankara late on Friday night. The country was on lockdown as the military aired broadcasts claiming its actions were in order to restore secularism and human rights.
The coup was eventually foiled however after tens of thousands of citizens came on to the streets to disarm the troops involved in the plot. Turkish President Recep Erdogan has vowed severe retribution against those sections of the military involved in organising the coup. Airports in Istanbul were closed overnight, military forces blocked traffic on several of Istanbul's bridges, with military jets flying over Turkey's largest city.
Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim announced on Saturday that the first stage of the coup was over.
Turkish government officials have announced that at least 190 people have been killed, more than 1,500 people wounded and over 2,800 military personnel detained since the coup started. Among them are high ranking officers: four generals and 29 colonels.
