Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova called to strengthen safety for journalists working in Ukraine, during her weekly press briefing in Moscow, Thursday.
Zakharova referred to the tragic incident with well-known Ukrainian journalist Pavel Sheremet, who was killed in a car bomb blast in Kiev on Wednesday. She stressed that the Russian Foreign Ministry demonstrated real numbers and facts of "what is happening with journalists in Ukraine" and established a dialogue with the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, Dunja Mijatovic.
Zakharova stated that "we need some way to affect this situation. After all, not only Russians and not only Ukrainians were killed. Representatives of the mass media of other countries also died."
She reiterated that "we do this is not to say that Ukraine is bad or the system is bad. We have never said that Ukraine is bad. We say that there is a problem." The Foreign Ministry spokesperson requested the Ukrainian authorities to investigate "this terrible case, that horrible case as objectively as possible and impartially."
The journalist and political analyst Pavel Sheremet was killed in a car bomb blast in Kiev, on Wednesday morning. Sheremet who worked for the online investigative newspaper Ukrayinskaya Pravda was traveling to work when an explosion ripped through the vehicle in downtown Kiev. The vehicle belonged to Alyona Pritula who is co-founder of Ukrayinskaya Pravda newspaper.
