First Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Defence and Security of the Russian Council of Federation, Frants Klintsevich, commented on Russia's missile systems deliveries to Iran during an interview in Moscow, Friday.
Klintsevich said the first shipment of the S-300 air-defence missile systems as well as Sukhoi Su-30 multi-purpose fighter jets, will be made. "Whether supplies have already begun or not - is not a question within my competence. But I can officially state and there is no doubt that they will be launched," he said.
Moreover, Klintsevich commented on the US intention to use its veto power in the UN Security Council to block any sale of the defence systems. "I don't really understand the position of the US administration because the decision has already been taken and international consultations were carried out. We are an independent country and we have our own obligations and contracts," he explained.
The contract for supplying S-300 missile systems to Iran was signed in 2007 and foresaw the delivery of five S-300 squadrons worth $800 million (€700 million). But in 2010 the contract was put on hold due to the UN's imposition of sanctions on Iran.
