The Trans-Siberian Railway’s centenary was marked by a specially decorated train named ‘Russia’, which departed from Moscow to make the 9288 km journey to Vladivostok on Tuesday.
A military-style band, accompanied by officials from Russian Railways and the Russian Geographical Society, saw passengers onto the train before it started on its journey.
Along the railway track is the ‘Amur Miracle’ bridge, which crosses the Amur River in the city of Khabarovsk, near the Chinese border. According to Mikhail Akulov from Russian Railways both “then and now these 2600 metres delight people.” He said the bridge is a “tribute to constructors, who, by using their engineering minds and mother wit, were able to overcome the obstacle created by nature.”
The Trans-Siberian Railway is the longest rail route in the world. It starts at Moscow’s Yaroslavl station and concludes at Vladivostok on Russia's Pacific coast. It usually takes around six to seven days to cover the distance, at an average speed of around 60 mph.
