Hundreds of thousands of Muslims from all over the world were seen walking around the holiest spot in the Islamic world - the Kaaba - at Mecca’s Masjid al-Haram Mosque on Thursday, just a day ahead of the official start of 2016’s hajj.
Local authorities reported that this year’s security measures at the pilgrim hotspots are at their highest level in history, with the aim of minimising the number of casualties, which have occurred during the pilgrimage in past years.
Some three million Muslims are expected to arrive for the annual Islamic pilgrimage, a ritual that all able-bodied and financially able Muslims are obliged to undertake during their lifetime. The 2016 hajj will take place from September 9 to 14.
