Thousands took to the streets of Rio de Janeiro to protest against Brazilian President Michael Temer's new education reforms, Monday.
Protesters chanted and drummed as they marched, and held a large banner reading "No to Pec241", in reference to name of the education reform bill.
Protester Ariel Mendoca denounced Temer for organising a 'coup' against former president Dilma Rousseff, stating “he is trying to reduce social rights, especially in education, by imposing his fascist and cruel capitalism."
The reforms were announced by Temer's administration on 20th September and propose to increase the compulsory hours spent at school and reduce the obligatory subjects studied to Portuguese, English and Mathematics, granting students the flexibility to choose the rest of their curriculums. The proposals have been criticised for not including subjects like arts, physical education, philosophy or Spanish in the schedule.
