Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte announced that his country would not participate in joint military exercises with the US following participation in what he described as "scheduled war games" in the South China Sea next week. Duterte was speaking during a meeting with the Filipino community in Hanoi, Wednesday.
Duterte said "I will maintain the military alliance because there is a RP-US pact which our country signed in the early '50s. But I will establish new alliances for trade and commerce and you are scheduled to hold war games again, which China does not want. I will serve notice to you now that this will be the last military exercise. Jointly, Philippines-US, the last one."
Duterte also announced that he would be making an official trip to Russia, following his Monday declaration that he wanted to strengthen trade relations with Russia and China, during a press conference in Manila.
