15.07.2016
Black Lives Matter organisers led hundreds in a march through the city of Leeds on Thursday, to protest against police brutality, the recent police killings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile in the US, and to demonstrate solidarity with the BLM campaign in the United States.
Co-organiser, Sophie, discussed her perspective on modern-day racism: "I feel that racism has become more of a front-line issue; we see it a lot more in the street; we see it lot more day to day; we see what we call micro-agressions a lot more."
Slogans such as "no justice no peace, no racist police," "black lives matter" and "we gone be all right" could be heard throughout the course of the demo. Janet Alder, sister of Christopher Alder, a former soldier who died in police custody, spoke at the demo, stating that "Black Lives Matter is a movement. It is not a terrorist organisation; it is people like every one of us here that are standing and demanding justice and demanding [the] accountability of the police."
Sterling, 37, was shot when two police officers went to investigate a claim that he was in possession of a gun while selling CDs in the parking lot of the Triple S Food Mart. Castile's death came just one day after the death of Sterling, also at the hands of a police officer. Demonstrations have been held across the US and the UK following the two police killings.
