Syrian government forces, assisted by the Red Crescent, started evacuating citizens and opposition fighters from Damascus’ district of Daraya using ambulances, buses and trucks, on Friday. The move became possible after a deal was agreed between Syrian opposition forces and the government on Thursday.
Under the agreement, the government will reportedly permit safe exit to 700 militants and their families out of Daraya and allow them to proceed to the opposition-held province of Idlib. The remaining civilians are to be taken to shelters located in government-held Kesweh, south of Daraya.
The suburb is located just several kilometres from both the Damascus palace of President Bashar al-Assad and the Syrian military's Mazzeh airbase.
