We have been protesting peacefully for a lot of years and no one heard us. Barcelona streets were flooded with pro-independence demonstrators on Monday as people continued to rally for the eight day of protests which have rocked the Catalan capital.
"Everyone has become a rebel, everyone in Catalonia is together, young and old people, right-wing and left-wing, all people are outraged. We are going to be out on the streets every day," said Marta, one of the protesters.
Activists were seen pelting vans belonging to the Spanish national police with paint bombs.
Spanish acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez visited the Catalan capital on Monday and drew criticism from protesters for his refusal to meet with Catalan President Quim Torra who reportedly urged the Spanish government to "sit and talk."
Protests and civil unrest have rocked Catalonia since the Spanish Supreme Court sentenced nine pro-independence leaders to up to 13 years in prison for their role in the region's 2017 bid for secession. According to Catalan media, at least 579 people have been injured, including 228 security officials, since the protests began.
