Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov spoke about the recent escalation of conflict in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region in Baku, Thursday.
Speaking about the ceasefire agreement, Lavrov said, “I agree that almost all components of the agreement already on the table” and that "the question is not how to match them, but how to find the right language."
Ministers also pointed to the fact that not only a political settlement is important but withdrawal of weapons needs to be discussed. Agreeing with his Azerbaijani counterpart Lavrov said: “it’s very important to take measures that will forbid such outbreaks of violence.” Mammadyarov himself called for the immediate withdrawal of Armenian troops from “occupied territories”.
Armenia and Azerbaijan agreed to implement a ceasefire in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone during a meeting of their chiefs of General Staff in Moscow on Tuesday. The truce was enacted at 12pm local time on April 5, although sporadic fighting has continued in the area, albeit at a lower intensity.
Hostilities in the region had resumed on Friday night, with Armenia and Azerbaijan both blaming each other for the ceasefire violations.
The first open conflict in the area started in 1988, when Nagorno-Karabakh, a predominantly ethnic Armenian mountainous region, broke away from the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic.
Nagorno-Karabakh is recognised by the United Nations (UN) as being part of Azerbaijan but has been under the control of Armenian military and separatist forces since 1994.
