Hundreds of demonstrators held a vigil and a protest in the capital of Honduras, Tegucigalpa, Friday, to commemorate the memory of Berta Caceres, the human rights activist who was shot at her home on Thursday. Reports indicate that there were no less than two killers involved but that the number could be as high as 11.
The activists carried candles and photos of the activist to honour her memory and calling for government officials to bring her killers to justice while rallying until the United Nations building.
Berta Caceres was killed in La Esperanza during an attempted robbery, according to the local authorities. However, Caceres family believe that the murder was a punishment for the activist's campaigns against dams, plantation owners and illegal lumberjacks. Her death comes just a week after she was purportedly threatened for showing opposition to the construction of a new hydroelectric plant.
Caceres who was the co-founder of the Council of Indigenous Peoples of Honduras (COPINH) had been awarded the Goldman Environmental Prize for her anti-hydroelectric campaign.
Over 100 activists have been murdered in Honduras between 2010 and 2014. Berta Caceres' funeral will take place in her hometown on Saturday.
