Doctor's Without Borders (MSF) launched a massive vaccination programme for children near the Idomeni refugee camp, Wednesday.
MSF is funding the project in cooperation with Greek authorities, with some of the vaccinations costing more than 100 euro. MSF projects to have vaccinated an estimated 600 refugee children by the end of Wednesday, with the aim of vaccinating up to 5,000 children in the coming weeks.
A reported 12,000 refugees are stranded at the Idomeni camp, on the border between Greece and Macedonia. Greek officials reportedly distributed leaflets last month, urging the residents to abandon the camp and head towards Thessaloniki, where they will be transferred to new refugee hotspots.
Greek authorities reportedly aim to settle at least 4,500 people at the four hotspots in the cities of Oraiokastro and Kaloxori, which constitutes just under half of those currently residing at Idomeni. The new hotspots are still in the process of being set up.
