A court denied Cardinal George Pell's appeal in the Australian city of Melbourne on Wednesday, upholding convictions against the former third ranking official in the Vatican for child sex abuse.
A crowd of supporters and critics of Pell reacted to the verdict, as the cardinal seen leaving the Supreme Court of the Australian state of Victoria and getting into a vehicle.
"Cardinal Pell is like my father, my brothers, my sons. He would never even consider doing such an act," said Pell's supporter, Helen.
"...Have it off with a boy in a sacristy and then, be at the front door shaking hands with people in five minutes. It's impossible, it's just impossible," argued another supporter of the cardinal.
While some were dissapointed by the verdict, other voiced their satisfaction. "They put people in positions of power that allow them to get away with raping children. No more, guys," said one of Pell's critics.
"He will rot in his cell, and then he can rot in hell, and I say 'Farewell Pell,'" added Michael, a Pell's opponent.
Pell appealed his conviction of five charges of abusing two choirboys in 1996. He was sentenced to six years in prison in March after a jury found him guilty of all charges.
