13.02.2016
Around 100 supporters of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party gathered in central Dresden, Saturday, to remember the victims of the allied bombing over the Saxony capital at the end of World War II. Tension mounted between the protesters and several counter demonstrators, with police intervening in a bid to prevent a violent altercation.
AfD supporters listened to speeches and laid flowers at the victim's memorial on Altmarkt square. Partitioned by police, dozens of left-wing counter-protesters stood outside police cordon with banners reading "Dresden since 1933" and shouting slogans such as "you lost the war" and "go away". Protesters went on to argue across the street. Two counter-demonstrators were led away by law enforcement after mild scuffles.
Between February 13 and 15, 1945, more than 3,900 tons of high-explosive were dropped by the US and UK military air forces causing around 25,000 casualties. Much of the city’s buildings and infrastructure were severely damaged
