Hindu devotees lay down in the street as herds of colourfully painted cows stampeded over them in India's central state of Madhya Pradesh on Thursday, as part of a local ritual to celebrate the festival of Diwali. The leap of faith under the herd of cows has reportedly been practiced in the municipality of Rajpura for centuries, occurring on the fourth day of Hindu festival of lights, dubbed Govardhan Puja. During the festival, the villagers decorate their cows with different paints and henna, with hundreds of spectators coming out to witness the spectacle. According to local reports, no one has ever died during ritual, which is believed to bring prosperity to the village.
