Law and Justice party candidate Andrzej Duda celebrated his victory in Poland's presidential election in Warsaw, Sunday, after gaining a total of 53 percent of the vote in the second round of the election. His main rival, incumbent President Bronislaw Komorowski, won 47 percent of the vote with an overall turnout of 56.1 per cent, according to the latest exit polls. In the first round of the presidential ballot on May 10, Duda had also managed to claim victory over Komorowski by 0.99 percent. When Duda takes over from Komorowski, who has been in office for five years, he will become Poland's sixth president since the fall of communism in 1989. Duda's previous political experience includes serving as a legal aide to former President Lech Kaczynski before he died in a plane crash in Russia in 2010. Following his victory, Duda addressed his supporters saying that "the president of Poland has to serve his nation. Above all he has to listen to his people and has to be open-minded. That's why the doors of the Presidential Palace will always be open." Speaking to his supporters after the election, Komorowski conceded defeat to Duda and said that the result was the "decision of the citizens of the free and democratic Poland".
