Russia: Meldonium meant for 'recovery' not doping, says drug's creator

The World Anti-Doping Agency's (WADA) decision to ban the drug 'Meldonium' was an “unpleasant surprise,” said the chairman of the board of Grindeks, a company which produces the drug, Juris Bundulis in Moscow on Monday.
Speaking at a press conference, Bundulis added that “Meldronate was never produced and used for doping." He went on to defend the drug, saying "We are very sure that Meldronate helped to save many lives. Unfortunately now its possibilities are restricted."
Bundulis was supported by Ivars Kalvins, a member of Latvia’s Academy of Sciences who developed the drug, said “Meldonium does not belong to the class of doping [substances]," arguing that Melodium has properties that boost recovery rather than an athlete's performance.
Meldonium was banned by WADA on January 1, 2016. The substance's creator has since demanded the agency remove Meldonium from its prohibited list for 2017.
