Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan slammed skeptics of the referendum results in a fiery address to his supporters in Ankara, Monday, contending that Turkey “achieved the most democratic elections which cannot be seen any democratic countries of Europe.”
One day following the 'YES' outcome of the Turkish constitutional referendum where 51.4 percent of the electorate voted in favour, the Turkish president vehemently rejected allegations of fraud by the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).
“We do not hear, see or care about the political reports that you are preparing,” Erdogan said, adding that “we will continue our path.”
Turkey's leader went on to criticise the European Union, saying that the referendum victory came despite the union “not letting this country’s ministers in to your countries.”
In a sign as to his future foreign policy ambitions, Erdogan said "Operation Euphrates Shield is not our last but the first operation. We are determined to apply all the operations needed to exterminate the terror organisations which are feeding along our borders from their attacks inside our land." The Turkish leader was speaking in reference to his military intervention into Syria in August 2016.
The 'YES' result means that the new draft constitution, approved by the Turkish parliament last January, will introduce a package of 18 constitutional amendments, paving the way for a presidential system of government.
Turkey's main opposition parties, the Republican People's Party (CHP) and the pro-Kurdish People's Democratic Party (HDP), were opposed to the reforms, arguing that they would significantly increase Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's power. The incumbent could potentially remain in his role until 2029.
