The United States signed an agreement with Israel to provide the Israeli military with $38 billion (€34 billion) in funding over 10 years, at a ceremony in Washington DC on Wednesday.
US National Security Adviser Susan Rice outlined the details of the accord, which will see Israel receive $3.8 billion (€3.38 billion) a year from 2019 - compared to $3.1 billion (€2.76 billion) at present.
“The memorandum of understanding we'll be signing shortly commits to providing Israel $38 billion in military aid over 10 years, including $33 billion in foreign military financing funds, and an unprecedented commitment of $5 billion for missile defence," Rice said. "This is the largest sum the US has provided to any country," she added."
Susan Rice also passed on US President Barack Obama's message of support for Israel's former President Shimon Peres who has been hospitalised after suffering a stroke. "On behalf of President Obama, let me say that we are all, today, thinking of and praying for an extraordinary leader," Rice said.
