Iraq: Christians preserve ancient Jewish synagogue in shadow of IS territory

Several Christians have offered up their services to help preserve an ancient Jewish synagogue in the Assyrian town of Al-Qosh, just 10 miles (16km) from the frontier of territory held by the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).
The synagogue, which is believed to contain the tomb of Prophet Nahum, had long been a place of worship for Jewish pilgrims. According to one local, Revan Al-Hakim, pilgrams would come "from all over Iraq and outside Iraq for a couple of days." However their numbers have dwindled dramatically in recent years.
Due to the ongoing turmoil in the country, the site has experienced a lot of "vandalism," Al-Hakim said.
