Tunisia: Thousands rally for public sector strike in Tunis over higher salaries

Thousands of public sector workers participated in a nationwide strike in Tunis on Thursday, demanding an increase in salaries and better living conditions. Similar protests were also held in other cities across the country.
The nationwide strike on Thursday reportedly affected the daily operations of airports, ports, hospitals and other public services, as the umbrella trade union UGTT failed to work out a solution during ongoing negotiations with government representatives.
"What the workers are demanding is an increase in salaries for the buying ability of the citizens in general. Living costs are so expensive so they have to increase the monthly salary to enables us to overcome the difficulties of life," said Abdallah Al-Saheli, a member of the Tunisian syndicate.
