At least ninety percent of the wildfires that hit Central Portugal are stable on Monday. More than a thousand firefighters were involved in the operation to tackle the blaze in the district of Castelo Branco.
However, work is still underway and two defence lines were set up by firefighters to tackle the fires: one in Vila de Rei and the other at Macao.
"There is still ten percent of area inside the fire lines that still have a need for a lot of attention, due to still being active, there are flames," said the spokesperson of Portugal's civil protection force Pedro Nunes.
He explained that the combat to the fires were done through both direct - attacking the flames with water - and indirect attacks - the use of heavy machinery to open access and securers that can possibly stop the fire lines.
"Fire was also used to close areas so that the probability of the fire returning would be lower in the more vulnerable areas, added Nunes.
The wildfires in Castelo Branco forced several people to flee their homes and reportedly left at least thirty injured in the region.
