German President Joachim Gauck addressed the members of the Bundestag (German parliament) during a commemoration ceremony in Berlin, Sunday, held for the victims of the Paris attacks, in which he said a "new type of war" has emerged. During his speech, Gauck said that the attack was against France, "but also against the open society, the lifestyle of the free and the equal, in Europe and in the whole world." Gauck went on to say, "those who commit such acts or endorse them, they must know, the fellowship of the democrats is stronger than the international of hatred. We bow to the dead, but we never bow to terror." Calling those behind the attacks "deviously acting murderous gangs," the German president finished by reminding his audience that the "militant conflicts are moving closer toward us." At least 129 people were killed and more than 352 left injured, 99 critically, after a series of co-ordinated attacks were carried out at six different locations across Paris on Friday evening. At least 87 of those victims were killed after gunmen opened fire during a concert at the Bataclan theatre, taking dozens hostage before detonating suicide bombs. Police stormed the venue, freeing the hostages and killing one of the attackers. Dozens of other people were killed in attacks at the French national stadium and a string of popular bars and restaurants.
