Anti-government militants in Moadamiyeh, west of Damascus, surrendered their arms after the suburb was taken by the Syrian Arab Army (SAA), footage released on Saturday reveals. Militants could be seen lining up with an array of arms, before having their name taken and their guns confiscated by government officials.
Speaking to an RT correspondent, one former militant explained how he had been coerced into joining the rebels: "I came to visit relatives. But they did not let me out. Militants did not let me out. So I stayed there. They made me do shifts at a checkpoint, so I stayed there."
Another man reiterated the same point, stating: "They made us to do it. The militants, that were here, made us. I swear. They drew us into it and then left for Idlib."
Representatives of the Syrian army are currently in the process of identifying those militants who have decided to surrender their arms.
On October 19, after three years of rebel-control, the SAA entered Moadamiyeh following negotiations with opposition forces. Around 2,000 people who refused to surrender were transported to the rebel-held province of Idlib. This is the fourth evacuation of its kind in and around the Syrian capital in the past two months.
