Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accused the European Parliament (EP) of sheltering terrorist organisations and of "taking sides with them," during a speech at the Istanbul Congress centre in Istanbul on Wednesday.
Speaking at a meeting of the Standing Committee for Economic and Commercial Cooperation of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, Erdogan referenced the upcoming vote concerning the continuation of talks on Turkey’s possible EU membership:
"I would like to express that, in advance, I am saying here and telling the whole world who are watching through their TV screens: whatever the result is, for us it has no value."
He went on to acknowledge that the “vote is not politically binding,” and added that the “attempt at such a vote by the EP indicates that they are a shelter for terrorist organisations and are taking sides with them."
The non-binding vote concerning talks on Turkey’s possible membership of the EU is due to take place at the European Parliament in Brussels on Thursday. It is thought that the vote is likely to favour a suspension of talks, following Ankara's crackdown on opponent's in the wake of the failed coup attempt in July.
